Preparing Your Kindle Edition

The same care, for a different way of reading

A carefully typeset print book deserves an equally thoughtful Kindle edition. Readers can change the size of the type, follow a note in isolation and move directly from the index to a passage. The book needs to work naturally in all of those situations.

We prepare the Kindle edition from the final corrected book, carrying the agreed text and its meaningful formatting into a layout that flows with the reader’s screen and type size. That involves editorial and navigational work as well as conversion.

A note should make sense on its own

In print, “ibid.” refers the reader back to an earlier citation. On Kindle, a reader may open that note without seeing the one before it. We resolve the reference and replace bibliographic “ibid.” with a self-contained short citation, retaining the correct page or other reference. We treat similar shorthand with the same care and query anything ambiguous.

Notes have clear links from the text and a return to the exact place the reader left. We preserve the book’s note numbering, including chapter or section restarts.

References that still lead somewhere

Instructions such as “see the facing page” can lose their meaning when the text reflows. We review internal page and layout references, use stable wording where the destination is clear, and link to the intended passage, note, chapter, figure or table. Page references to other published works remain part of their citations.

An index you can follow

If we have created your index, we can use its retained passage connections to link entries to the relevant discussion. “See” and “see also” references lead to the corresponding index headings, and return links help readers resume their search. An existing index can also be assessed, but its destinations need to be established and checked.

A connected bibliography

Where citation relationships are verified, readers can follow a reference to its bibliography entry and return to the original citation. We also replace repeated-author markers with the appropriate names so that an entry makes sense when reached on its own. Our bibliography preparation service establishes these relationships as part of its work.

Comfortable reading on screen

We build useful chapter navigation and a linked contents page, keep illustrations with their captions, and adapt print spacing and page furniture for reflow. Italics, quotations, meaningful line breaks and Hebrew passages within an English book receive appropriate attention. Tables, poetry and parallel texts may need individual treatment.

Before delivery, we compare the ebook with the final source, check links and note returns, validate the EPUB and review the converted book in Kindle Previewer. Our current Kindle service is for English books, including English books containing Hebrew quotations. Please talk to us about any unusually complex material.
